The History of Damouchari
Damouchari belongs to the wider area of Mouresi, the village located higher up the mountainside.
As the only natural harbour on the eastern coast of Pelion, it has played an important role throughout the region's history.
According to local tradition, Damouchari was established by Venetian sailors during the period of Venetian maritime influence in the Mediterranean. They built a small fortress to protect the harbour from pirate attacks and used the area as a safe stopover for supplies and rest during their long voyages.
One theory suggests that the village's name originates from foreign sailors who prayed to the Virgin Mary for protection from pirates, asking her to "grant them grace". Another interpretation links the name to the French expression "d'amour", meaning "for the sake of love".
For sailors approaching the coast, the sight of the protected harbour and its fortress represented safety and relief after difficult journeys across the Aegean Sea.
In the early twentieth century, before modern roads connected the villages of Pelion with Volos, Damouchari's harbour served as an important gateway for food, medicine and essential supplies. A customs office and large storage facilities once operated here, highlighting the harbour's significance for the surrounding communities.
